About 2 years ago I was introduced to having Betta fish as pets from an female associate at one of my work related assignments. This associate has a Betta on the Reception area counter in the company lobby. Her aquarium setting is a very large clear glass vase with a plant actually growing out of the aquarium! She has had the Betta fish for more than a year and a half in this setting and the betta fish appears to be as happy as a pig in mud! Of course the plant roots are thoroughly cleaned of soil before inserting it into the aquarium. In this type of setting the fish seems to truly enjoy having the roots to swim around and often rests up against the root ball. The plant absorbs the bacteria/toxins from the food remains and fish feces, it keeps the water very clean and clear. Both the plant and fish have a great symbiotic relationship!

I started off with one Betta, who I have since named “Turk” (for his deep turquoise coloring) and now have many more! They are so lovely and graceful with their large fins I thoroughly enjoy taking a break and just watching them swim around their aquarium homes. I have had fish in the past, Fantail Goldfish and Swordtails which were fun and enjoyable to have, but these Bettas are by far the most enjoyable and easiest to care for. They are unique in that they breathe from the surface and not from the aquarium water itself. And you do not feed the Betta more than 3 times a week or change water in the vase more than 1 time a week. Diana with her type of aquarium setting does not have to change the water more than once a month. Amazing isn’t it!

The vase aquariums make great home decor accents! You can see my setups in the photo album below. I purchased vases, natural colored rocks (goes with my home decor) and live plants for my aquariums. I feel most comfortable changing the water in the vase aquariums once a week. Eventually I will have 2 gallon mini-aquariums with filtration systems for all of my Bettas, so I won’t have to change the water each week. My aquariums are placed throughout my home, primarily in the great room with one in the kitchen, one in my master bathroom, and one in my Guest Bedroom (see photos below). I also have one in my office!

You may just like to be a Betta parent yourself!

Well here are photos of my aquariums and my Betta kids! Their names are Turk, Red, Snowflake, Flash, Blue, July, Captain Jack, and Spot. You will see why I named them as I did below.

Enjoy!

This is Red, and I mean red in more ways than one!

Here is Red taking a break at the bottom of his home.

Red tires quickly of my attention.

This is Flash a Crowntail Betta.

Flash again, can you see why I call him Flash?

This is Blue, and well you can see why I call him Blue!

Blue has the longest tail I have ever seen on a Betta!

Another photo of Blue

Susie Q was very curious to see what her Mommy was doing to the fish.

This is July, the Betta I had in my office.

A close up of July's aquarium which was in my office.

This is Snowflake an iredescent albino Betta, he is gorgeous with his gossamer fins!

Another close up of Angel, look at how the flash from my camera lights him up.

Here is Captain Jack! He is named after the character in Pirates of the Carribean.

Isn't Captain Jack a dark beauty!

This is Spot, named because he has an irredescent white/red body and irredescent white fins with red spots. A quite unusual Betta!

This is another close up of Spot. His aquarium home is now located on my dining room table.
